If you had a time machine and could send just one message to your past self, what would it say?
It’s an interesting question because our past selves often carried things we didn’t know how to put into words.
Maybe you would tell yourself, “You are going to be okay.”
Maybe you would say, “Stop blaming yourself for things that were never your fault.”
Maybe you would remind yourself, “You deserve love, even when you don’t feel lovable.”
Or perhaps your message would simply be:
“Keep going. You haven’t seen the best parts of your story yet.”
We can’t go back and change what happened. We can’t erase the difficult moments, undo painful decisions, or give our younger selves the information we have today.
But we can change the way we carry those experiences.
That is where reflection can become part of healing.
Sometimes, writing to your past self allows you to finally offer yourself the compassion you needed back then. You can acknowledge the fear, the disappointment, the mistakes, the losses, and the moments when you felt alone.
You can also recognize something important:
You survived moments you once thought you couldn’t get through.
Your past does not have to remain a place of regret. It can become a place of understanding.
What Would You Tell Yourself?
Take a moment today to imagine sitting across from your younger self.
Look at that version of you with compassion—not judgment.
What would you want them to know?
Would you tell them to trust themselves?
Would you tell them not to settle?
Would you tell them that the heartbreak won’t last forever?
Would you tell them that their voice matters?
Would you tell them to travel, laugh more, rest more, or stop worrying so much about what other people think?
Whatever your message is, write it down.
Don’t worry about making it perfect.
Let it be honest.
Let it be emotional.
Let it be the message you wish someone had given you when you needed it most.
A Hear to Heal Reflection
“Dear younger me…”
Finish the sentence.
Then ask yourself:
● What did I need to hear back then?
● What do I understand now that I didn’t understand before?
● What pain have I carried that I’m ready to release?
● What am I proud of myself for surviving?
● What would I like my future self to remember about today?

Healing doesn’t always mean forgetting the past.
Sometimes healing means finally looking back at yourself with compassion.
And perhaps the message you send to your past self will become the message you need to hear today.
You made it this far. Keep going. Your story isn’t over.
Hear to Heal™ — Heal. Empower. Inspire.
As you reflect on what you would say to your past self, remember that those words can also guide you today. You cannot change what happened, but you can choose compassion over judgment, growth over regret, and hope over fear. Your past is part of your story, not the definition of who you are. Carry forward the wisdom you have gained, release what no longer serves you, and trust that there are still meaningful chapters ahead.
