I Am Not The One To Play With!

If you could make your pet understand one thing, what would it be?

Every pet parent has that one thing they wish their furry companion could finally understand. For some, it’s “Stop chewing on my shoes.” For others, it’s “The couch is not your personal jungle gym.”

But for me?

With my dog Louie, my message is simple, clear, and delivered straight from the soul:

“Sir… I am not the one to play with.”

My Dog Thinks He’s a Person

Louie and I share such a close bond that sometimes I’m convinced he speaks English fluently and just pretends he doesn’t. The way he communicates is almost human:

First of all, I had him and his sister, Chanel. She is such a sweetheart — soft-natured and wonderfully clingy in the cutest way. My oldest daughter actually took her in as her emotional-support companion. Chanel is the complete opposite of her brother: quiet, gentle, and always eager to follow directions.

Louie & Chanel getting Groom

When I walk in the door, he scratches like he’s knocking, ready for hugs. When he wants water, he gives me a pointed bark—like a tiny, fluffy supervisor. When he needs attention, he turns into a whole Broadway performer.

Our relationship is beautiful, hilarious, and sometimes… dramatic.

I’ve been a dog mom since high school, and my love for my pets has always run deep. Sadly, my two big babies passed away last year. One of them was poisoned after killing an iguana, and the other crossed the rainbow bridge due to old age. Losing them was heartbreaking — they were family, and they carried so much of my life’s memories with them.

The Transversing Circus

Then there are the times when Louie starts barking nonstop and running in circles like he’s preparing for a puppy Olympics audition. That’s when I know he’s transversing—his signature move for:

“Hey mom, I need in. Right now.”

But here’s the thing:

There’s regular Louie…

And then there’s doing-too-much Louie.

And for that version, I have a very specific look.

The “Stop It” Stare

All I have to do is lock eyes with him and say, “Louie… stop it.”

And he knows.

He knows.

That’s when the whole show stops.

No more barking.

No more running laps.

No more theatrics.

Just silence.

Just obedience.

Just Louie realizing Momma’s home—and she is not amused.

One Door. Instant Transformation.

I open the patio door, stand like a principal in the hallway, and say, “Stop it right now.”

The air changes.

The world quiets.

Louie becomes a saint.

It’s like magic… except the magic is simply Momma means business.

If Louie could understand just one thing in this big, beautiful world, it would undoubtedly be this:

Momma loves you… but she is not the one to play with.

So sorry one of your buddies was poisoned. Was that from the iguana or done by a human? Will you replace your pet(s)?

She wasn’t just any dog — she was the daughter of my Old English Bulldog, strong, healthy, and full of life. Keeping the backyard clear from trespassers was her thing, something she took pride in every single day.

But the day she killed that iguana changed everything. We didn’t know the danger at the time, and four days later… she was gone. Just like that.

Losing her was shocking and heartbreaking because she had always been so healthy and full of energy. None of us expected it. It felt unreal — one moment she was doing what she always did to protect our home, and the next we were grieving a loss we never saw coming.
