Think back on your most memorable road trip.
There are trips you plan… and then there are trips that change you.
My most unforgettable journey was a bold, breathtaking coast-to-coast road trip—from the quiet cold mornings of Oregon all the way to the heart of Ohio in just two days. For a city girl like me, the scenery alone felt like a deep breath I didn’t know I needed.
The air was crisp, the mountains endless, and the silence peaceful. And yes—I collected a shot glass in every single state I passed. Each one now sits on my shelf like tiny reminders that adventure doesn’t always require a passport or a plane ticket.
A Road Trip That Felt Like Healing
This was only my second long-distance road trip, but it reminded me why I fell in love with them in the first place. About ten years ago, I took a three-week East Coast road trip with my children—from Florida up to Connecticut and back again.
We stopped every two days to visit my military friends and their families. The kids made new friends. The adults shared stories, vented, laughed, and reconnected in ways we hadn’t in years. When we reached Connecticut—where I was last stationed—I walked my children through my old base. I showed them pieces of my military life they’d never witnessed. That moment felt full-circle, grounding, and unexpectedly emotional.
Those kinds of memories don’t just happen. You create them when you slow down and choose the scenic route.
The Beauty of the Unexpected
One of the greatest blessings of road trips is the surprise factor. Driving through Montana left me speechless. The wildlife, the open land, the rugged textures of the foothills, the mountains rising like giants, the raw beauty of the badlands—none of it looked real.
There’s something powerful about watching untouched land stretch for miles. It reminds you how big the world really is and how small your daily stresses actually are.
A Family Moment I’ll Never Forget
On the way, I made a four-hour stop in Peoria, Illinois to visit my cousin and his family. It felt long overdue. We caught up, laughed, and talked about everything life had thrown at us.
Then he told me something that stuck with me:
“You’re the first family member to ever come visit me.”
That touched my heart in a way I didn’t expect. It reminded me that presence is powerful. Before I even left Peoria, I started planning a full-family surprise trip—so he can feel the love, support, and connection he deserves.
