Twice in the Presence of Greatness: My Encounters with Shaquille O’Neal

Who is the most famous or infamous person you have ever met?

One of the most memorable celebrity encounters I’ve ever had was with none other than Shaquille O’Neal. In fact, I’ve had the chance to meet him up close not once, but twice—and both moments left a lasting impression.

The first time was at a comedy show. As I was leaving, there he was—standing casually out front with a few people. To my surprise, he was incredibly kind and approachable. I even asked if I could take a photo of my foot next to his—and he happily obliged. The size difference was hilarious, but what stood out even more was his gentle, generous spirit. Shaq truly lived up to the phrase “gentle giant.”

The second time was during a Miami Heat game at the American Airlines Arena. My sister had been gifted two VIP tickets, and I had the incredible opportunity to join her. From VIP parking and the exclusive lounge to our courtside seats, the experience was unforgettable. And as luck would have it, I was seated just two seats away from Shaq. Although we didn’t speak that night, simply being that close to him again brought everything full circle.

Meeting someone as iconic as Shaquille O’Neal—not once, but twice—was more than just a celebrity encounter. It was a powerful reminder that even the most legendary figures can leave a lasting impact through simple acts of kindness and humility.
