Social media bullying is terrifying! Per statistic, 59% of U.S. teens have been bullied or harassed online.

Bullying is a problem that has been around for as long as anyone can remember. However, with the advent of social media, bullying has taken on a whole new meaning. Social media bullying is harassing, threatening, or humiliating someone else behind the screen. This type of bullying can be extremely harmful and even deadly in some cases.

There have been numerous studies conducted on the effects of social media bullying. The results of these studies are clear: social media bullying can have a profound and negative impact on the victim. Some of the potential effects of social media bullying include:

-Anxiety

-Depression

-Low self-esteem

-Suicidal thoughts or behaviors

-Sleep disorders

-Eating disorders

These are just some of the potential effects of social media bullying. It is important to remember that every individual reacts differently to bullying. Some may experience only one or two of the effects listed, while others may experience many more.

If you or someone you know is being bullied on social media, it is important to seek help. There are several resources available to help victims of social media bullying. For instance, the comprehensive new book The Love of Likes by Cheurlie Pierre-Russell provides an excellent resource for teens who are experiencing bullying on social media. The author also offers a book Friendly Monsters: Behind the Computer for younger children who are experiencing cyberbullying. These books offer practical advice and guidance on what to do if you are being bullied, how to stand up to your bully, and how to protect yourself from further harm.

If you or someone you know is in need of help, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Remember, you are not alone. There are people who care about you and want to help. Seek out the resources that are available to you and get the help you need to heal from social media bullying.

Here are a few things that The Love of Likes and Friendly Monsters: Behind the Computer teaches you to do if you fall victim of social media bullying:

-Talk to someone you trust about what is going on

This could be a parent, friend, teacher, or counselor. It is important to have someone to talk to who will understand and can offer support. Talking about what is going on will not only allow you to get the help you need but talking with someone you trust can even help you to feel better and may also give you some ideas about how to deal with the situation on your own.

-Keep a record of what is happening

This can be helpful if you decide to take action against your bully. Keeping a record will provide evidence of the bullying and can be used to show patterns of behavior. This can be screenshots, messages, or even just notes about what has happened. This will be helpful if you decide to take action against your bully.

-Block or unfriend the bully

This may seem like an obvious one, but it can be hard to do. If possible, you should block or unfriend your bully on all social media platforms. This will make it more difficult for them to contact you and continue to bully you. If you are not able to block or unfriend your bully, you should at least limit your contact with them.

-Report the bullying to the social media platform

Most social media platforms have policies against bullying and harassment. If you are being bullied on social media, you should report it to the platform. This will help to ensure that the bully is held accountable and may also help to prevent further bullying. Reporting any acts of bullying can also help to make social media a safer place for everyone.

-Reach out for help

If you are feeling overwhelmed, and don’t feel comfortable talking with a friend or relative, please reach out for help. There are a number of resources available to victims of social media bullying. You can find much more information in The Love of Likes book, or you can always contact a local crisis center or hotline.

Social Media Bullying can Take Many Forms

There are a lot of different types of bullying that take place on social media, each of which can have a serious effect on the victim. Here are some of the most common types of social media bullying:

-Instigating:

This is when someone deliberately starts arguments or fights on social media. This can be done by making outragous statements or posting offensive content in order to get a reaction. This type of bullying is often done in order to get attention or to try and make the victim look bad.

The best way to deal with an instigator is to simply ignore them. Don’t engage in arguments or fights, and don’t give them the attention they are looking for. It is also important to block and report anyone who is repeatedly instigating arguments or fights.

-Shaming:

Shaming is when someone tries to embarrass or humiliate someone else on social media. This can be done by posting private or embarrassing photos or information, by making hurtful comments, or by spreading rumors.

If you are being shamed, it’s important to report the behavior immediately, but don’t reply to the bully or give in to their demands. The best thing to do is to ignore the bully and try not to let their words get to you.

-Cyberstalking:

Cyberstalking occurs when someone repeatedly sends unwanted messages or comments to another person. This can be done through direct messaging, comments on posts, or even by tagging the victim in posts. Cyberstalking can also involve monitoring the victim’s social media accounts or tracking their online activity.

If you are being cyberstalked, it is important to block and report the person who is doing it. You should also save any evidence of the stalking in case you need to take further action.

-Harassment:

Harassment is when someone repeatedly sends abusive or threatening messages to another person. This can include hurtful comments, threats, or even sexual harassment.

If you are being harassed online, it’s important to take screenshots or save any messages you receive. This will be helpful if you decide to take action against the bully. You should also block and report the harasser and reach out for help.

Conclusion

Social media bullying is a serious problem that can have a lasting effect on the victim. If you are being bullied, it’s important to reach out for help and to take action against the bully. Remember, you are not alone, and there are people who can help.
