Love has a profound positive impact on children with disabilities.
Does showing love have an impact on a child’s mental and emotional well-being? Does giving affection have a significant impact on a child’s psychological development? Every child experiences moments when they may feel deficient, incomplete, or inadequate. These feelings are not exclusive to children; adults experience them too.
One of the most powerful things about love is that it affects us all. Whether we are experiencing one of our highest or lowest moments emotionally, receiving genuine love, encouragement, and affection can remind us that we are valued. As individuals, we can grow through the experience of being loved, accepted, and supported.
But what happens when a child has a disability and constantly struggles with feelings of inadequacy? Should children with disabilities receive extra love and affection because of their disability?
The answer is not that they need to be loved more than other children—they need to know that they are loved, valued, respected, and accepted just as they are.
The Impact of Disability on Self-Image
Disability can affect a child’s self-image, confidence, social experiences, and self-esteem. Being a child with a disability can come with challenges that are difficult for adults to fully understand.
Parents and caregivers often provide physical support, medical care, and assistance with daily needs. However, emotional and psychological support is equally important.
Children are naturally curious about the world around them. When they encounter someone who looks, moves, communicates, or functions differently from them, they may stare or ask questions. This curiosity does not necessarily come from a place of cruelty. Children often need guidance to understand that disabilities can take many different forms.
When adults respond to children’s questions with age-appropriate explanations and teach compassion, acceptance, and respect, children can learn to appreciate differences rather than fear or judge them.
When Being Different Affects Self-Esteem
From my personal experience of being involved with a child with a disability, I witnessed how the stares and reactions from other children could make her feel different and inferior.
Those experiences contributed to feelings of insecurity and inadequacy—both physically and emotionally.
That experience helped me understand how important it is for children with disabilities to receive encouragement, acceptance, and unconditional support. When children feel loved and valued, they can develop a stronger sense of security and self-worth.
Showering children with love does not mean protecting them from every challenge. Instead, it means helping them understand that their disability does not determine their worth, potential, or purpose.
Miracle Beyond the Storm
I wrote the book “Miracle Beyond the Storm” to tell her life story from an aunt’s perspective.

She was born with a disability and experienced feelings of inferiority among her peers at school. Her disability created challenges that affected her confidence in certain areas of her life. She disliked the attention and stares she received from other children, and those experiences contributed to low self-esteem and deep feelings of inadequacy.
Despite the challenges she faced, she received tremendous love and support from her parents, family, and friends. That love became an important part of her journey and helped her become the person she is today.
Her story represents a powerful battle between feelings of inadequacy and the healing impact of being surrounded by people who believe in you.
As she says in the book:
“I overcame the hardest storm in life, and that was to be born with muscular dystrophy. Nothing else in life can be more difficult for me. I am known as the ‘Disabled Girl’ who did not let my medical condition control my purpose in life.”
Her journey demonstrates how love, encouragement, acceptance, and determination can influence a person’s confidence, outlook, and ability to pursue their purpose.
If you know a child with a disability—or any child struggling with feelings of inferiority—my hope is that Miracle Beyond the Storm will help remind them that their circumstances do not define their worth.
